Sodomites!! A Musical of Biblical Proportions

When: Fridays. Continues through July 31 2009
Phone: 773-561-4665
Price: $15
The Annoyance Theatre's new musical is a cheerfully profane retelling of the biblical story about God smiting Sodom and Gomorrah for the crime of moral perversion (read: gay sex). Conceived by James Asmus and written by the cast, the script wryly revises Genesis. The Almighty is a capricious bastard, his angels of destruction harbor doubts, and Lot--Sodom's alleged lone good man--is, in fact, terrible: half-mad with paranoia and far more depraved than his supposedly wicked neighbors. The show revels in the sheer fucked-upness of a story that includes the attempted gang-rape of angels and a human-to-salt transformation, but it's also animated by humanistic outrage at God's arbitrary and homicidal impulses. Featuring a catchy score and witty lyrics by Mike Descoteaux, it's the toe-tappingest blasphemy I've seen in a while. --Zac Thompson

Saw the show this weekend and really, really was impressed by how smart the humor was. Kind of low production value - but great material and cast made up for it.
