I have seen Bromberg several times in the past and loved his music. However, this show was just BORING. There was very little music variety. My friend and I began joking that the next song (and the next and the next and the next) would be a bluesy number with a mandolin solo. Also, the performers took 45 minutes for their intermission, so the 10pm show lasted until after 1am. The audience was visibly bored and restless -- a lot of people left before it was over. Finally, Jorma was a huge disappointment. He simply doesn't have the vocal chops or guitar skills to match Bromberg, which was hugely (embarrassingly) apparent. And it seemed as though he wasn't even trying. Boring, trite song selection, a lack of passion for the music. I literally was almost asleep while he played his solo part of the show. All in all pretty much the worst concert I've ever seen. Seriously.
(However, I'll go back to see Bromberg when he's with a band again.)
Opening act, Harry Manx was fantastic! Richie and his backup guitarist were just terrible. I almost walked out.
The Shows at The Old Town School of Folk Music were as AWESOME as they get... Warren Haynes ...one hell of a Guitarist and even more so as a Human. Check out his charity work.... . The Xmas Jams in Ashevile NC in December are the best VALUE in Rock today(John Paul Jones playing Mandolin with Del McCory...when will you see that again...Never... though here's to hoping as well as Johnny Winter, Allmans, DTB ,Travis Tritt...and I could go on and on...). $55 US for each night...Both nites kicked off at 7pm... Friday...walked out of arena @ 445am Saturday ended a little earlier... 330am..or there abouts... proceeds going to Asheville Habitat for Humanity. WORTH EVERY FREAKIN PENNY .Warren by Himself or with The Mule or Allman Bros... NEVER DISAPPOINTS!!!
For roots music, and some very eclectic acts, this is the place to see them. Intimate seating, especially if you are a member and can get table seating in front of the stage, and excellent sound make this a great venue.
He played for less than an hour. Most of it was covers. The one Box Tops song and the single Big Star song were uninspired choices, and he barely could remember how to play the 8 to 10 songs he played. Oh, and everything he did play had the same exact instrumentation, he didn't even bother to change the tone on his guitar until the last two minutes. One of the biggest disappointments of the many many gigs I've seen over the years.
