The man in the fearsome chains comes to witty life in Tom Mula's solo show, based on his 1995 novel. In Mula's version, Marley must change Scrooge's heart in order to save himself from damnation--and given that the two men were "a pair of rabbiting wolves" in business, that's no easy task. Accompanied by a fey sprite or "bogle," Marley finds himself journeying into his own past as the familiar elements of Dickens's story unfold. Mula, who played Scrooge for years in the Goodman Theatre production of A Christmas Carol, gives a loose but assured performance that brings charm to the sometimes self-consciously literary passages. Jeremy Getz's terrific light design adds otherworldly magic, though the venue feels too cavernous for such an intimate piece. --Kerry Reid
