Louis Sacher adapted his own 1998 young adult novel for the stage, and it translates well. The story--about a luckless boy who finds himself trapped in a work farm-like camp where he spends his days pointlessly digging holes--is compelling, and the characters are vivid and quirky. It also helps that Sacher's story theater-influenced version leaves much to the audience's imagination--particularly the vast, dry lakebed where the protagonist and his fellow inmates toil. Director Matthew Reeder has assembled an intense, energetic ensemble that realize Sacher's script with rare grace and power. Joe Wescott easily wins our sympathy as the play's hapless hero, and Tony Bozzuto our enmity as a sadistic guard. --Jack Helbig

One of the best productions I've seen in awhile, though I don't go to the theater that often. Took my daughter and she also liked it very much. Great performances across the board.
