Having fallen afoul of an unnamed military regime for reasons they haven't been told, two men--brainy Wallace and dreamy Valdez--rot away in adjoining cells in a nightmarish prison where they're routinely subjected to torture that makes waterboarding look fun. The premise calls to mind the war on terror--if ever there was a black site, this is it--but playwright Craig Wright takes things in a more Kafkaesque direction. Toyed with by forces beyond their control, the men reach the limits of hope, understanding, and even language. A Red Orchid Theatre's searing production, directed by Dado, boasts heartrending performances from Steve Key and Danny McCarthy as the prisoners, and a riveting turn from Keith Kupferer as a guard with empathy in spite of himself. --Zac Thompson
