There are authors of beloved children's books whose output for grown-ups also merits attention (E.B. White springs to mind). But judging by his comic sketches for the stage, Shel Silverstein isn't one of them. Displaying none of the quirky charm of Silverstein's kids' books--including The Giving Tree and Where the Sidewalk Ends--this dated, inane, pervasively sexist collection of one-joke playlets features a man who auctions off a woman as if she were a cow, thugs who torture the guy who coined the phrase "have a nice day," a laundry that watches rather than washes clothes, and so on. Lavina Jadhwani's poorly lit, clumsily acted production for the Shadowmen is distinguished only by Matthew Buettner's set design--a clever echo of Silverstein's black-and-white illustrations. --Zac Thompson

I thought it was a fun evening. Some scenes were better than others when I saw it Friday for opening weekend, but it moved nicely. Plus, it was silly the way Silverstein always was when I was a kid. Only this was more dark. But Shel still makes dead ponies funny.

Dug the contrast of the black and white set with the moody lighting and colorful costumes. Liked the ensemble feel and the way actors interacted in between the mini-plays. Thought that was a nice touch and that the cast made the whole thing a fun evening.
