The title refers not to the blues standard but to a saloon, whose owner--a crook, into gambling and pimping--sold his soul to the devil some years before in exchange for an unbridled winning streak. His luck runs out, though, when Old Scratch, in the form of a suave young cardplayer, returns to collect his debt. Onto this urban Faust story playwright Brian Tucker grafts a second, confusing plot involving a hooker who's also, apparently, the devil's ex. Somehow, this leads to a lot of head-scratching theology and fevered moralizing--which ultimately overpower and derail Congo Square Theatre Company's production. Directed by Harry Lennix, the show nonetheless has an attractively noirish look and an effective performance by Anthony Chisolm, who tempers the gangster's power with a haunted, nervous energy. --Zac Thompson
