I've never understood zombies. For instance: Why do they have to be so slow? Vampires are undead, too, but they get around all right. And they can be charming—at least the Anne Rice vampires can—while it's all zombies can manage to trudge, slobber, and howl. WildClaw Theatre's production of Scott T. Barsotti's The Revenants hasn't resolved these issues for me, but it's made me a lot more sympathetic toward brain-eaters and the people who love them. Joe and Karen and Gary and Molly are best-friend couples who've taken refuge in a basement during a zombie siege. But Joe and Molly have been bitten and are now completely slobbery. Also, hungry. Steadfast Karen believes that if she and Gary can only keep their respective spouses from wandering off, they'll eventually return to their normal selves. So they tether them to a metal bar in the floor and improvise therapies like feeding them white bread instead of humans. While they wait for recovery, however, the situation forces certain secrets into the open. The play becomes a weird, four-sided love story in which two of the lovers are intent on eating the other two. Barsotti's sense of intercouple dynamics is strictly conventional, his ending is not unexpected, and his Karen is not quite, uh, fleshed out as a character. But under Anne Adams's direction, the production is compelling all the same, expressing the longing and hopelessness that Karen and Gary certainly feel and exploiting our inability to gauge whether Molly and Joe feel anything at all. A moment of possible communion between Gary and Molly is at once uncanny and emotionally powerful.
